2012 Virtual Commencement Frequently Asked Questions

Virtual Commencement is a website dedicated to celebrating the graduation of Strayer University's and the Jack Welch Management Institute’s online students, and includes video, graduate photos, online awards, and online degree presentations, all designed with online students in mind.

Beginning this year, students must complete their degree programs before registering for 2012 Virtual Commencement.

To participate in Virtual Commencement, graduates must meet all of the following requirements

  • Have earned an associate, bachelor's or master's degree online in 2012 or at the end of 2011;
  • Have completed all but two of their classes online;
  • Have applied and been approved for degree conferral;
  • Do not have an outstanding balance with Strayer University; and
  • Have enrolled for Virtual Commencement by the registration deadlines listed below.

Fall 2011 or Winter 2012 Quarter April 2, 2012 - May 31, 2012 July 2012
Spring or Summer Quarter 2012 September 17 - November 14, 2012 December 2012
Fall 2012 December 17 - February 14, 2013 April 2013

Who is eligible to participate in the 2012 Virtual Commencement?

Students who have taken all of their classes online, have officially completed their associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree in 2012; have applied for degree conferral; and do not have an outstanding balance with Strayer University can participate by enrolling by the registration deadlines listed above.

If I don’t graduate until the end of the year, am I still eligible?

Yes, Strayer University and the Jack Welch Management Institute will provide 2012 online graduates with three opportunities to enroll in Virtual Commencement. Please see above for schedule.

If I am eligible, will I be included in Virtual Commencement even if I don’t submit my photo and hometown information?

No, Virtual Commencement is only for students who “opt in” by submitting their photos and hometown information.

How do I know if the photo I send is high quality?

In order for you to be happy with the way your photo looks on the website, the photo should be:

  • A head shot of you (e.g., head and shoulders)
  • Professional-looking
  • High-quality (minimum size is 186 x 216 pixels)
  • JPEG photo file (Word documents, PDFs and PowerPoint files cannot be accepted) 

When will the 2012 Virtual Commencement go live?

Can my Virtual Commencement graduate profile be accessed by anyone using the Internet?

Yes, Virtual Commencement is a public website. Since Virtual Commencement is a live website, your graduate profile may appear if someone searches for your name on the Internet.

How will I know the website has gone live?

Graduates who register for 2012 Virtual Commencement by the deadlines will receive an email invitation when their profiles go live.

If I am attending a physical commencement ceremony, can I still participate in Virtual Commencement?

Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirements listed above, you are welcome to participate in the 2012 Virtual Commencement regardless of whether you choose to attend a physical ceremony. To participate in both, follow these steps:

  1. Apply to graduate.
  2. Register to attend the regional ceremony of your choice.
  3. Enroll in Virtual Commencement by the registration deadlines listed above.

 

If I have been approved to graduate but have not yet received my diploma in the mail, am I eligible to participate in Virtual Commencement?

In order to receive your diploma, you need to complete the Degree Conferral Application once you have completed all your coursework.

To submit your Degree Conferral Application:

  1. Login to your iCampus account.
  2. Click on Student Center and the My Academics tab.
  3. Click the Apply for Graduation link to begin the application process.

What if I expect to graduate in early 2013?

Why is Virtual Commencement only open to online students?

Strayer University’s commitment to all students means that students who choose to earn their degrees online also have the option to “graduate” online via Virtual Commencement.
