Graduate Accounting Capstone (ACC599)

This course allows students to apply the knowledge gained in the program related to financial and managerial accounting, forensic accounting and auditing concepts. The students will apply critical thinking and decision making skills to real world business cases involving complex accounting decision through analysis, synthesis, prescription and application of accounting concepts.

The primary objective of the Master of Science in Accounting (MSAC) is to provide specialized, graduate level education to persons seeking positions as professional accountants in industry, government, and non-profit organizations. In addition, the MSAC program offers graduates much of the academic background necessary to pursue certification in public accounting (CPA) and management accounting (CMA).

Students who have not earned degrees from appropriate fields of study may be required to take additional coursework as a prerequisite for completing the program.

The program provides a well-balanced integration of theoretical accounting concepts and modern quantitative methods in decision-making.

The principal objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Accounting program are to provide students with a broad, fundamental knowledge of the field, and to prepare students for employment in accounting careers.

Students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Accounting may exercise an individual option, through the selection of elective courses, which may allow him/her to prepare for professional goals such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA), or Accredited Business Accountant (ABA).

Many states have additional requirements directly related to CPA examination preparation. Students should consult their respective state Board of Accountancy for further details.

Financial Accounting (ACC557)

This course provides a framework for financial accounting concepts and practices used by internal and external users in businesses. Topics presented include the accounting cycle, financial reporting, financial statements analysis, ratio calculation and interpretation, and management decision making based on financial results.

The Associate of Applied Business in Accounting program prepares an accounting student to become a bookkeeper, an accounts receivable or payable clerk, and other entry-level positions in business.

Students can choose from three different concentrations. Each is an exciting educational option for students looking to increase their understanding, advance their careers, and expand their opportunities in accounting information systems, controllership, or taxation. Each concentration offers specialized courses unique to the discipline.

Undergraduate prerequisites are required for entry into the graduate program; students who have not earned degrees from appropriate fields of study are required to take additional coursework as a prerequisite for entry into the program.

Students entering the program must have completed two mathematical studies courses: (i) an introduction to college mathematics, which emphasizes the representation and operation of polynomials and rational expressions, functions, and the graphing of linear functions, as well as methods of solving linerar and quadratic equations; and (ii) a descriptive statistics course, which concentrates on the art of describing and summarizing data via experimental design, measures of central tendency, correlation and regression, and probability and chance variability, as well as their use in the social sciences, economics, and business.

Completion of a Strayer University program, to include the concentration in Public Accounting in the Master of Science degree, does not guarantee a student will pass the CPA Examination.

In order to apply for licensure as a CPA in any U.S. jurisdiction (the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands), a candidate must pass the Uniform CPA Examination. However, passing the exam alone is not enough to obtain CPA licensure in most states. Requirements can vary by state and can be difficult to understand. Students can choose from four different emphases, each of which offers an exciting educational option for students to increase their understanding, advance their careers, and expand their opportunities in the following areas: accounting information systems, controllership, and taxation. Each offers specialized courses unique to the discipline.

The Diploma in Accounting program is designed primarily for students who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-accounting field and want to sit for the CPA Examination. The diploma program also will assist Federal government employees who want to change their job series codes to accounting and benefit other professionals who seek accounting skills to increase their job opportunities. Students develop knowledge and skills in financial, cost, taxation, nonprofit, and municipal accounting, as well as auditing.

Many states require additional business-related courses to parepare for the CPA exam. Students should consult their respective state Board of Accountancy for further details.
