Most professions now require a working knowledge of digital and online applications, so it was only naturalthat education would go online as well. A recent survey of higher education leaders by the Pew Research Centerrevealed a shift in universities’ approach to online learning.
More than three quarters of college presidents report that their institutions now offer online courses, with 89% of four year public
colleges and universities offering online classes.
About 23% of all college graduates report that they have taken a class online. However, the share doubles to 46% among those who have graduated in the past 10 years.
Nearly two thirds of college presidents anticipate that 10 years from now, more than half of the textbooks used by their undergraduate students will be entirely digital.
COMMUNICATING IN THE CLASSROOM
More than half of recent college graduates (57%) say they use a laptop, smartphone or tablet in class at least some of the time.
THE FUTURE OF ONLINE LEARNING
College presidents expect substantial growth in online learning: 50% predict that 10 years from now most of their students will take classes online.
Based on findings from two Pew Research Center surveys of presidents at 1,055 twoyear and four year private, public and forprofit colleges and universities in spring 2011.
