how to work

Succeeding is fun when you have people in your corner to champion your accomplishments, and to share in your accomplishments. It isn’t a journey you have to undertake alone—utilizing your network of support is important to achieving your goals. At Strayer University, we believe in our students’ success, and want to become a part of that journey. That’s where the Success Coaches come in.

Your Success Coach is your own personal cheerleader. They’re dedicated professionals who focus solely on your success—motivating, advising, and guiding you throughout your education. From enrollment to graduation they’re here to help you achieve your goals. So, how exactly do you work with a Success Coach? What do they do, and how can you use them to make the most of your experience at Strayer University? Keep reading to learn more about how to work with your Success Coach.

Successful Students Mean Successful Coaches

When we say the Success Coaches are here to help you every step of the way, we mean every step of the way. Success Coaches offer a wide range of extremely personalized services to help you in virtually every aspect of your life. They are highly connected to staff at all levels of Strayer University and have access to a wide range of resources to address issues you may have. If there is something they themselves cannot do for you, they will research and explore other solutions to meet your needs.

Success Coaches are focused on keeping you enrolled and much of what they do centers on making sure you are able to successfully complete your degree. Think of them as your guru, your mentor—your very own Yoda. They succeed when you do. Here are a few things Success Coaches can do:

  • New student orientation and onboarding
  • Academic advisement
  • Registration assistance
  • Connection to tutoring, study groups, or additional assistance
  • Career services and preparation
  • Help you find access to childcare
  • Assistance with locating student discounts and opportunities to reduce costs
  • Track and analyze student progress
  • Liaise with different university departments

Lorraine C. Ladish, former editor-in-chief of Mamiverse.com, connected with a Success Coach at Hispanicize14, a Strayer University co-sponsored conference for Latino professionals in social media, advertising, and other related fields. Lorraine says the Success Coach inspired her to pursue her lifelong dream of creating Viva Fifty! a site for empowering a bilingual community of people over 50. If one encounter with a Success Coach can put someone on the path to their dream, imagine what working with one can do for you!

What Do YOU Need to Succeed?

Every Strayer University student should have a Success Coach. While you undoubtedly have people in your corner, family and friends who believe in and support you, imagine how helpful it will be to have access to someone who’s entire career is focused on the development of yours. Success Coaches are assigned to groups of students, but they work with you one-on-one, so you have their undivided attention. Communicating with them is flexible as well: you can reach your Success Coach by phone, email, text, video chat, and sometimes in-person at a Strayer University campus if you have access to one.

We match you with a Success Coach, but once the two of you are connected, it is up to you to shape the relationship. Remember, Success Coaches are there to support you, but you need to tell them what you want. Your needs will guide your interactions. The first meeting will be to establish your needs and begin creating your plan for success. Come prepared so you can begin your journey right away. Now that you know what the Success Coaches can do, here are some good questions to ask yourself:

  • How do I define success?
  • What are my immediate and long-term goals, both personally and professionally?
  • Why did I enroll at Strayer University? What am I hoping to get out of my education, and how does this play into my overall goals?
  • What areas of my life do I excel at?
  • Where are the areas in which I’m struggling? Where can I use extra help?
  • How do I plan on measuring my success? What are my milestones?
  • Do I work well with a lot of guidance, or am I a self-starter? Can I succeed with more or less independence?

Your First Meeting

While your Success Coach responds to your needs as they evolve (which they likely will), that initial meeting is crucial to establishing your overall plan for success and getting the ball rolling on your collaboration. Thinking about your goals ahead of time will make it easier to formulate them into an actionable plan.

After establishing your goals, it is important to stay in contact with your Success Coach. Communicate with them often through whichever channels work best for you. Never be afraid to ask questions or reach out for help. Keep them updated on each little success and each setback. Part of their job is to track students’ progress for each academic term, and your feedback and communication will help them help you.

Success Coaches change lives. They help you unlock potential you either didn’t know you had or did not have the resources to realize. Already a student? Now that you know how you can work with a Success Coach connect with yours today!
