Eligibility

Though the VA makes a final determination concerning your eligibility, in general you are considered eligible if you have been in service for more than two years and are planning to remain active, or if you are separated from service and:

  • Entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985
  • Received a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Received an honorable discharge

If you have a service related disability, you may be eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits. This program provides eligible veterans with a monthly allowance as well as payment for tuition, most fees and necessary books and supplies.

Under certain circumstances, survivors and surviving dependents of veterans may also be eligible for benefits.

Students receiving tuition assistance from the military are not eligible to be certified for VA Benefits. If you are receiving tuition assistance, you are eligible to take advantage of the “Top Up” Program which utilizes VA Funding.

For additional information about VA Benefits, please visit the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Web site.
