Making a Positive Impact Through Education

September 5, 2013

Makeda Winn (MHSA '11) returned to school to gain the knowledge she needed to get ahead in her career, but above all, she wanted to serve as a role model to her loved ones. "I hope my journey inspires others and shows them the importance of furthering one's education," Winn says. Today, Winn continues to make a difference in other people’s lives in her position as an associate instructor at Guilford Technical Community College in Greensboro, N.C., where she teaches a variety of subjects and serves as a mentor and tutor for students.

In recognition of her outstanding achievements since graduating from Strayer University in 2011, Winn was named the University"s Outstanding Alumna during the regional commencement ceremony held in Charlotte, N.C. The award recognizes significant achievement by alumni both in their professional life and in their community.

Winn previously worked as a medical transactions specialist for United Healthcare, and as a case manager for foster care and adoption services. She also served as an in-home intervention specialist/teen parent group leader.

To give back to her community, Winn has contributed hundreds of hours of time to AmeriCorps. She has also served as a guest speaker at the local YMCA to talk about how she overcame adversity in 2001 after surviving a serious motor vehicle accident.
