Philadelphia resident recognized for creating community tutoring and mentoring programs

Herndon, VA – March 13, 2014 – Strayer University, a leading postsecondary institution for working adults, is pleased to announce that alumna Kelley Everett of Philadelphia, Pa., has been named a “Harvey’s Hero” for her work with Youth Angel Scholars in helping youth throughout the Philadelphia area achieve academic success. The organization has been awarded a $10,000 stipend by Strayer University. The surprise announcement will be made during today’s Steve Harvey daytime show, which honors exceptional community leaders.

Everett founded Youth Angel Scholars Incorporated, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help youth ages 13-18 transform in the areas of health, civic service, scholastics, entrepreneurship, and leadership through academic and volunteer activities.  A K-12 educator for more than a decade, Everett began Youth Angel Scholars and several other youth development programs after seeing the impact that both fostering academic excellence and positive attention can have on children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Youth Angel Scholars Inc. is known throughout Philadelphia for hosting the Teen Transformation mentoring program, G.E.A.R. Up career exhibitions, and a variety of year-long activities to empower teens. Before establishing Youth Angel Scholars Inc., Everett also created ASK For Tutoring LLC, a private mobile tutorial service for  K-12 and adult learners, and the Saturday Academic Achievement Academy, which specializes in enhancing reading, math, and science proficiency for K-12 students. In addition, ASK For Tutoring hosts several community wellness activities such as ‘Say No to Strangers’ workshops, Graduation Coach trainings, and ‘Edu Series’ discussions for parents seeking holistic educational resources.

“It is incredible to think that what was once a dream and a desire to help the youth in my area – and that started as a plan written while sitting on my couch in a notebook – has turned into a valuable service for so many over the last ten years,” said Everett.  “I’m honored that Youth Angel Scholars and all the activities I am involved in are playing a part in developing the best and brightest minds of our community and helping them to fully tap into their potential.”

In addition to the academic support that each Scholar receives, they are assigned an Academic Success Coach that provides them with encouragement and advice throughout their journey.

“Academic Success Coaches are critical to the transformation of the students that come to us,” said Everett. “Whether they help our students identify scholarship opportunities for when they are ready to go off to college or are just there to provide a listening ear, it is their unwavering belief in what our students can achieve that keeps our programs going.”

Everett earned a master’s degree in education management from Strayer University’s Delaware County campus in Springfield, Pa., in 2010, and a bachelor’s degree in special and elementary education from Delaware State University in 1999

“We could not be prouder of Kelley and all that she is accomplishing,” said Dr. Michael Plater, president of Strayer University. “She and her team are creating lasting benefits not only for the students that are enrolled in her activities, but for their families and entire communities. We are proud to include her among our alumni ranks and to help raise awareness of her important work."

Celebrating more than 120 years since its founding in Baltimore in 1892, Strayer University offers relevant and rigorous academic programs to working adults, first-generation college students and others who may not have access to higher education, preparing them for success in today’s competitive job market. Strayer University graduates earn degrees in programs ranging from business administration and accounting to education and information systems.
