Emmy-Award Winning ABC Sports Anchor to Address Graduates Outstanding Scholars Honored

ATLANTA – May 16, 2013 – On Saturday, May 18, over 1,200 students will graduate from Strayer University during a regional commencement ceremony to be held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. Graduating students and alumni will receive awards and recognition for their outstanding achievements. Anthony Amey, an Emmy-award winning sports anchor and reporter for ABC affiliate WSB-TV, will deliver the commencement address.

“It is a pleasure to speak to such a talented group of individuals. Many new doors of opportunity are now opening up for these graduates who have demonstrated their ability to pursue their goals and achieve a great feat through determination and hard work,” said Amey. “In any game, the end result is important, but it is the journey to that point that shows someone’s true strength of character.”

Since 1892, when Dr. S. Irving Strayer opened the first campus in Baltimore, Strayer University has provided individuals with the opportunity to earn a quality higher education that prepares them for the dynamic business world. Today, Strayer University offers innovative, relevant and rigorous academic programs to working adults, first-generation college students and others who often do not have access to higher education. Students graduating at the Atlanta commencement ceremony are Strayer University students from across the nation, representing 75 Strayer University campuses and online.

The following individuals will be recognized for their academic excellence and commitment to education:

  • Sarah Green-Hosey of Aberdeen, Md., valedictorian: Strayer University’s valedictorian title reflects a 4.0 grade point average and a strong level of engagement in community and extracurricular activities. Green-Hosey earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a focus on homeland security and emergency management. She will use the skills she developed at Strayer University to continue in her career in the civilian sector.  Prior to her current position as a management analyst for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Green-Hosey was an emergency manager and first responder to chemical and natural disasters for the U.S. Air Force. She also previously managed sexual harassment and rape prevention training programs for the military’s Equal Employment Opportunity office, which informs participants about available resources and aims to remove the stigma associated with reporting sexual harassment.  Outside of work, Green-Hosey is actively involved with the American Legion and volunteers with the National Guard’s Youth ChalleNGe program.
  • Luevirta Hammonds of Augusta, Ga., winner of the Outstanding Graduate Student Award: This award is given to a Strayer University master’s degree student with a 4.0 grade point average who has made significant contributions in both the workplace and community. Hammonds is graduating with a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in health services administration. She is a licensed practical nurse for the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Ga., where she provides patient care and medication management for the clinic. Hammonds has cared for patients around the world, including in hospitals in New Jersey, North Carolina and Würzburg, Germany. Prior to earning a master’s degree, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga. Outside of work, Hammonds helps serves on her local church’s Education Committee, which provides financial assistance to college students.
