Valedictorian Fulfills Promise to Mother to Earn College Degree
November 15, 2011
When Shawn Badgeley crossed the stage during Strayer University's regional commencement ceremony in Orlando, Fla., she fulfilled a promise that she had made before her mother's death in 2006. Badgeley promised that she would earn a college degree.
“I decided to stop making excuses and do what it takes to earn my degree and honor the commitment I made to my mother,” Badgeley recalls. “With the support and encouragement from my husband, children and friends to excel, I was able to balance life, work and anything else that came my way.”
In recognition of her academic excellence, Badgeley was named valedictorian during Strayer University’s Nov. 5 commencement ceremony at the Orange County Convention Center in Florida.
In addition to maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, Badgeley is a supervisor of the Internal Resource Center for Small Business at CenturyLink, in Apopka, Fla. “I’m now confident about my strengths and ability to mentor others,” says Badgeley, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. “As a supervisor with a degree in management, I serve as a mentor and have a better understanding of the processes and policies related to employee diversity, human resources and management.”
