Professor Selected by Governor to Reform Policies

When Strayer University professor Peggy Terhune was chosen by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory to serve on the Medicaid Reform Advisory Group, she was both humbled and thrilled at the opportunity to use her 40 years of experience working in mental health to advise public policy and make a difference.

“Every person is of worth and value and we can all play a part in helping others get the care they deserve,” she says. Terhune was selected as one of five appointees to work with the state’s Department of Health and Human Services to develop a detailed plan to reform North Carolina’s Medicaid system. The advisory group recently presented their final draft plan, which must now pass through the House of Representatives and the Senate.

For almost 20 years, Terhune has served as chief executive officer of Monarch, a nonprofit organization that supports approximately 30,000 people with disabilities, mental illness and substance abuse challenges.

The Asheboro, N.C., resident currently serves on the board of directors for the Council on Quality and Leadership. Since 2003, she has taught online graduate classes at Strayer University. “My goal in life is to help others and sharing my passion for education with my students has been a wonderful experience.”
