Working Smart

When Nicole Faison (MBA ’02) began writing her master’s thesis at Strayer University, she had no idea that her dissertation would be used to eliminate more than $2 billion of improper payments within rental housing assistance programs funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“I’ve always believed in ‘working smart’ by utilizing technology to make tasks as efficient as possible,” Faison says.

She has worked for the government for more than 11 years and is now the deputy director of the predictive analytics division for HUD’s Office of Inspector General. She is currently developing a system that will eliminate fraud, waste and abuse within all HUD programs by consolidating data into one infrastructure, potentially saving the government billions of dollars.

The recipient of more than a dozen awards, including the Presidential Management Excellence Award and a personal commendation from President George W. Bush, Faison speaks at universities across the country to inspire the next generation of government workers. “As a graduate and federal employee, I want to show others the great opportunities with the federal government and how they can become future leaders of America,” she says.
