Fall 2009 Strayer University Student Success Stories Contest

OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES

 

Who Can Enter

 

You are eligible if you are 18 years of age or older as of January 15, 2007, and are a legal United States resident residing in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia at the time of the Contest Finals.

  • You are 18 years of age or older as of November 8, 2009
  • You are a current Strayer University student
  • You are a legal United States resident residing in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.

 

You are not eligible to enter and will be disqualified if:

 

  • You are an employee of Strayer University or any of its respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliated companies or a member of the immediate family of a Strayer University employee (parent, children, siblings, spouse, regardless of where they live) or live in the same household of a Strayer University employee (whether related or not).
  • Your story has been previously published in any Strayer University publication or other media, (unless the story features changes considered significant by the judges). See “How Will Entries be Judged?” below.

 

How to Enter

 

To enter, visit http://www.strayer.edu/success and complete the Student Success Stories Contest Entry Form, which is also available by typing the following URL into your Internet browser:

Your entry should provide an original, written description relating to your decision to pursue a degree from Strayer University and/or the impact a Strayer University education has had on your professional and personal life and/or obstacles you have overcome to complete your degree at Strayer University. You must complete all required fields on the entry form. You may enter only once. Duplicate entries will be discarded and not considered for prize eligibility purposes. Only entries submitted via the website electronic form will be accepted. Entries submitted via any other method, including but not limited to U.S. Postal Service, facsimile or other express delivery services, will NOT be accepted.

 

Students are also invited, but not required, to supplement their online entry form with a homemade video detailing their success story uploaded to the University’s Photobucket account.

 

Strayer University does not claim any ownership rights in the photos, video, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") that you post on the Photobucket Web site. By posting any Content on Photobucket, you hereby grant to Strayer University a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete, display, and reproduce your Content, including, without limitation, outside of the Photobucket Services  on Strayer University’s Web site and social networking Web sites such as YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace. Strayer University maintains full discretion to determine whether to use your Content or not.  Strayer University agrees not to sell your Content to any third parties. If you would like to remove any Content once posted, please contact Strayer University at digital@strayer.edu. You may not publish any photos or images that are inappropriate, off-topic, unlawful, infringe copyright or other rights of third parties or which contain any other form of illegal content. By posting a photo or image you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Strayer University from all claims and expenses arising out of any photos published by you that are in breach of the rules set out in this legal disclaimer. If a person believes that a photo or image infringes its rights, this person should notify Strayer University immediately at digital@strayer.edu.

 

By submitting your entry form, you accept all contest rules and agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges, which will be final. Strayer University reserves the right to edit, adapt, publish, and use your submission, name or likeness, without compensation and by participating in the contest, you consent to any such use, including for commercial purposes, without compensation.

 

Deadline for Entries

 

Your entry must be received by December 21, 2009 at midnight (12 a.m.) Eastern Time. 

 

How Will Entries Be Judged?

 

Entries must be newly created and the original recipe of the contestant. Initial judging will be done by an independent judging agency and home economists for appropriate use of two or more different eligible products in addition to the criteria outlined below for the finalist recipes:

Judges will disqualify previously published recipes, such as but not limited to those in cookbooks, in magazines, from food companies, on major food or recipe websites and winners in cooking contests, unless the recipe features changes considered significant by the judges. Finalists will be required to certify, on information or belief, that their recipes are their original creation and have not been published or publicized and have not won a cooking contest. Judges reserve the right to assign entries to the Recipe Category they deem appropriate. Final judging will be done by a panel of food experts. Decision of the judges is final in all matters relating to this Contest.

Entries must be the original writing and ideas of the contestant. Initial judging will be done by a committee of Strayer University personnel in conjunction with representatives from Wray Ward, the University’s authorized public relations agency, taking into account whether the contest entry form was fully completed and the criteria outlined below:

 

*The extent to which the story shows unusual determination or commitment to pursuing a higher education degree.

*The extent to which the story shows how pursuit of a higher education degree has affected their professional standing and career trajectory.

*The extent to which the story is relatable to Strayer University students, alumni or applicants.

*The uniqueness of the story when compared to previously published student or alumni stories.

*The extent to which the story can be verified by third parties.

*The prior association, if any, of the story and/or entrant’s personal information for advertising purposes for another educational institution.

 

Judges will disqualify previously published stories, such as but not limited to those in newspapers, magazines and websites, unless the story features changes considered significant by the judges. Finalists will be required to certify, on information or belief, that their stories are their original creation.

 

Final judging will be done by a panel of Strayer University personnel. Decision of the judges is final in all matters relating to this Contest.

 

Prizes

 

Winners will be notified by mail, email or phone on or around January 22, 2010. The 6 finalists with the most compelling stories will receive Strayer University prizes on or around January 29, 2010. Of these 6, the student with the most compelling story will win an iPod Touch 8G (estimated retail value of $229). The remaining 5 finalists will receive Strayer University merchandise (estimated retail value of $25 per finalist).

 

Apple and iPod are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.  Apple is not a participant in or sponsor of this promotion.

Release

By participating in the Student Success Stories contest (the “Contest”), entrant agrees to release and hold harmless Strayer University and its respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors, dealers, dealer advertising associations, advertising and promotions agencies, prize suppliers and any other agency that provides services in connection with this Contest, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, representatives, contractors and agents and successors and assigns (collectively, the "Released Parties") from and against any and all rights, claims and causes of action whatsoever that they may have, or which may arise, against any of them for any liability for any matter, cause or thing whatsoever, including but not limited to any injury, loss, damage, whether direct, compensatory, incidental or consequential, to person, including death and property, arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from their acceptance, possession, use or misuse of the prize in the Contest, or their participation in the Contest, or their participation in any Contest or prize related activity. Entrant also further acknowledges that Strayer University, its affiliates, subsidiaries, employees, officers, directors, and promotions and advertising agencies have neither made, nor are in any manner responsible or liable for, any warranty, representation or guarantee, expressed or implied, in fact or in law, relative to any prize or the Contest.

Publicity

Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest constitutes entrant's consent to use of entrant's name, likeness, photograph, performance, information submitted in the entry form, opinions and/or hometown and state by Strayer University and its parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, and their advertising and promotion agencies and other designees' for promotional, publicity, public relations and advertising purposes in any manner in any and all media now or hereafter known worldwide in perpetuity, without further payment, consideration, permission or notification.

General Conditions

Strayer University reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Contest, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures or any other factor beyond Strayer University’s reasonable control impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Contest, as determined by Strayer University in its sole discretion. If terminated, Strayer University may, at its sole discretion through qualified judges, select the potential Winner from among all eligible, non-suspect entries received. Strayer University reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Strayer University reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Any failure by Strayer University to enforce any term of these Official Rules or any applicable laws shall not constitute a waiver of such right. If any provision of these Official Rules is found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, then entrant, Strayer University and the court shall endeavor to give effect to the intent reflected in that provision, and the remaining Official Rules shall retain their full force and effect.

Limitations of Liability

The Released Parties are not responsible for: (i) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by entrant, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest; (ii) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (iii) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Contest; (iv) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries; (v) late, lost, undeliverable, damaged or stolen mail; or (vi) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant's participation in the Contest or receipt or use or misuse of any prize. Strayer University is not responsible for late, damaged or undeliverable entries or for any technical problems, malfunctions of computer systems, servers, providers, hardware/software, lost or unavailable network connections or failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmission or any combination thereof. Strayer University and the Release Parties are also not responsible for any typographical/other error in entries, selection announcement or for any liability for damage to any computer system resulting from participation in, accessing or downloading information in connection with this Contest.

Disputes

This Contest is void where prohibited or otherwise regulated.

All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the entrant and Strayer University in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the Commonwealth of Virginia or any other jurisdiction.  

Entrant's Personal Information

Information collected from entrant will be reviewed by Strayer University and Wray Ward, and is subject to Strayer University’s Privacy Policy, to the extent that policy does not conflict with the “Publicity” clause listed in these Official Rules. Wray Ward, has a confidentiality obligation to the University and will use personal information collected from entrants only for the purpose of assisting the University with the coordination and judging of this contest and for no other purpose.
