State Licensure and Approvals

Strayer University is authorized to grant degrees from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Under the current regulations of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (“Board”), eligibility to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam and be licensed as a CPA in Texas requires CPA applicants to meet certain requirements.  One such requirement provides that CPA applicants must have graduated from a recognized institution of higher education.  While Strayer University meets the current standards for recognition, due to a recent rule change Strayer must, in order to be a recognized institution after July 18, 2013, either achieve accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) or successfully demonstrate to the Board that we meet equivalent accreditation requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (“SACS”).

Strayer University is working diligently to meet this new requirement.  We are a candidate for ACBSP accreditation, and anticipate achieving that distinction prior to July 18, 2013.  In addition, we have petitioned the Board for a determination that we meet equivalent accreditation requirements of SACS.  However, if we do not meet either of these criteria prior to July 18, 2013, the coursework completed and degrees earned from Strayer will not meet the education requirements for the Texas CPA exam.

We will continue to keep you apprised of these developments.  In addition, under Texas rules, of the 45 quarter hours of upper-level accounting coursework required for a candidate to be eligible to take the CPA exam in Texas, at least 22.5 of those hours must be taken in face-to-face courses.  Texas students wishing to sit for the CPA exam should check with the Board for additional requirements that may apply (https://www.tsbpa.state.tx.us/).
