Quarter System
Strayer University offers yearly enrollment using a quarter system. This means that a new session starts four times each year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). Students may start taking courses during any quarter. Students must enroll in three consecutive quarters before taking a break in enrollment. Summer quarter is not a guaranteed vacation session.
What is a Syllabus?
At the beginning of each course, students will receive a syllabus. A syllabus is a course plan or outline that explains the requirements for the class. The syllabus usually lists the required textbooks, assigned readings, and the test or quiz schedule. Students are expected to complete all assignments listed in the syllabus.
Course Length
Strayer University runs on a standard 11-week quarter system. We also offer two mini-sessions per term; each mini-session is approximately 5 weeks in length.
Credit Hours
Undergraduate and graduate courses at Strayer University equal 4.5 credit hours. This is equivalent to 3.0 semester hours of transfer credit at schools on a semester schedule.
What is my Grade Point Average (GPA)?
Your quarterly grade point average (GPA) equals the number of grade points earned divided by the number of courses taken. A grade of “A” earns four grade points, “B” earns three grade points, “C” earns two grade points, “D” earns one grade point, and “F” earns zero grade points. Undergraduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0, and graduate level students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Grading System and GPA
Undergraduate students will receive one of the following letters upon completion of a course at Strayer University:
| Grade | Explanation | Grading Scale | Quality Points |
| A | Excellent | 90 – 100% | 4.0 |
| B | Good | 80 – 89% | 3.0 |
| C | Average | 70 – 79% | 2.0 |
| D | Below Average | 60 – 69% | 1.0 |
| F | Failure | 0 – 59% | 0.0 |
| F | Failure (Administrative) | ||
| I | Incomplete | ||
| W | Withdrawal | ||
| WF | Withdrawal Failing | ||
| X | Audit | ||
| R | Repeated Course | ||
| IP | Grade Not Posted | ||
| S | Satisfactory | ||
| U | Unsatisfactory | ||
| NS | No Show |
The grading scale for the graduate program does not consider grades below “C” as passing. Any grade below a “C” carries zero quality points. GPAs for graduate students are calculated using the following scale:
| Grade | Explanation | Grading Scale | Quality Points |
| A | Excellent | 90 – 100% | 4.0 |
| B | Good | 80 – 89% | 3.0 |
| C | Average | 70 – 79% | 2.0 |
| F | Failure | 0 – 69% | 0.0 |
| F | Failure (Administrative) | ||
| I | Incomplete | ||
| W | Withdrawal | ||
| WF | Withdrawal Failing | ||
| X | Audit | ||
| R | Repeated Course | ||
| IP | Grade Not Posted | ||
| S | Satisfactory | ||
| U | Unsatisfactory | ||
| NS | No Show |
Probation and Suspension
If you receive less than the required grade points during a quarter, you will be placed on academic probation. During your next enrolled quarter, it is recommended that you immediately repeat those courses in order to improve your cumulative GPA.
If your poor grades continue through the next quarter, you will be placed on academic suspension. This means you will not be allowed to register for any more classes. Students placed on academic suspension will be reported to the USCIS and may be subject to deportation.
