Our Academic Structure

QUARTER SYSTEM

Strayer University offers enrollment using a quarter system. This means a new session starts four times each year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall), and you may start taking courses whenever a new quarter starts. International students won’t, however, receive an automatic summer break; to apply to take a break, you must first complete three consecutive quarters without interruption.

SYLLABUS

At the beginning of each course, you’ll receive a syllabus that outlines and explains the requirements for that particular class. The syllabus usually lists the required textbooks, assigned readings, and the test or quiz schedule. You’re expected to complete all assignments listed in the syllabus.

COURSE LENGTH

Strayer University runs on a standard 11-week quarter system. In some courses, we also offer two 5-week mini-sessions per term.

CREDIT HOURS

Undergraduate and graduate courses at Strayer University equal 4.5 quarter credit hours—the equivalent to 3.0 semester hours of transfer credit at schools running on a semester schedule.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)

Your grade point average (GPA) equals the number of grade points you’ve earned divided by the number of courses you’ve taken. A grade of “A” earns four grade points, “B” earns three grade points, “C” earns two grade points, “D” earns one grade point, and “F” earns zero grade points. Undergraduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0; graduate level students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

SATISFYING ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS WITH A FOREIGN TRANSCRIPT

International education credentials require evaluation by a third-party evaluation agency if issued by a country other than the United States. You may have your international educational credentials evaluated by an outside agency at your own expense, but the evaluations must be prepared by a NACES member organization. For international education credentials not in English, you must present an English translation. Translations must be prepared by an embassy or NACES member organization. The NACES website, www.naces.org/members.htm, provides a listing of current member organizations.
