Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
It is the policy of Strayer University to afford qualified students with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in, and thus benefit from, all programs, services, and activities of the University. This includes, but is not limited to, providing appropriate academic adjustments and auxiliary aids and services for persons with disabilities as defined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended; the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA); and applicable federal and state nondiscrimination laws. Strayer University does not discriminate on the basis of disability. The University seeks to enhance a student’s academic experience within the classroom by offering accommodations, including, not limited to, use of a note taker; extended time on exams; extended time on assignments; use of a calculator; provision to take tests in separate location and the permission to use a tape recorder in class. A student with a disability is not required to disclose their disability to the University unless the student wishes the University to provide a reasonable accommodation. Accommodations can only be ensured by the first day of classes if requested at least thirty (30) calendar days prior to the start of the quarter. However, the University will put interim accommodations in place to the extent possible for requests received less than thirty (30) calendar days in advance.
Process for Requesting Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
To request accommodations, students must complete the “Academic Accommodation Request” form, which provides the University information about their disability, the accommodations the student is requesting, and medical documentation supporting the request. The above-mentioned forms and documentation should be sent to the ADA Coordinator, who serves as the University’s Section 504 coordinator. The ADA Coordinator will review and contact the student if additional information is required. Once the completed application is received, the ADA Coordinator will then issue the student a letter indicating whether the student is determined to be a qualified student with a disability and, if applicable, the accommodations the University will provide to the student. The ADA Coordinator will contact the student’s instructors at the start of each quarter informing them of the special accommodations to be made.
